Weird Computer Problems
Permalink

Hi I have a major computer problem and can't figure out what is wrong or what to do.

1. My computer cannot shut down "normally", to shut down computer I have to hold the button in on the machine.

2. When my computer is online ( you can hear it if you pick up the telephone), but it 'appears off line'.

3. Since I know that I AM online, I attempt to browse and I end up getting the windows message box asking me if I want to connect.   I am unable to connect to paltalk and skpe or get my email.  The computer acts as if I am not connected to the internet.

my computer is running Windows XP,my computer is home grown.   my internet and shut down problems started 4 days ago.  The first thing that I noticed that was odd, was that my dial up window began randomly popping up while I was browsing.  Normally I got online through network connections, but then this other window would pop up... I cannot think of anything else that happened previously to that...

What could be wrong?

Miss molly,

What version of windows are you using, as that shutdown problem is a common one for windows 98, if it is not 98 then you may wish to remove any recently installed hardware or software that is on your computer as those are what would cause a shutdown hang.

As for your dial up, your network configuration somehow changed and needs to be set back to the way it originally was.

Hey Geek, How does one get to do what you do--is there alot of training involved?  Also I had Mollys prob in the past--whenever I used my external CD drive my comp would not shut off. I alos think its bad to have dialup installed if you are running dsl T1 or cable, is that true?? Thanks--the wiseman

If you have windows XP then your problem would be a recently installed piece of hardware/software or a failing piece of hardware. I would suggest removing any recently installed hardware/software and running windows xp system restore back to a time when you were not having this problem

To do what we do at our lavel I would suggest schooling, certifications, study, and most important of all on the job experience, such as breaking your own computer reptedly Having a 56K modem installed is not a problem but if you have dial up settings in place you may run into some problems with always on connections
